Knight in shining armor

Few games capture the spirit of Halloween quite like Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Released in 1991 by Capcom, this brutal side-scrolling platformer pits the brave knight Arthur against an endless parade of zombies, demons, and undead beasts.

The story is simple but timeless: Princess Prin-Prin has been kidnapped once again by the forces of darkness, and only Arthur, armed with his trusty lance and a very fragile suit of armor, can save her. Players guide him through cursed graveyards, fiery caverns, and icy mountains, battling swarms of monsters that seem determined to end his quest at every turn.

Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts built on its NES predecessor, delivering sharper graphics, smoother animation, and a new double-jump mechanic that added both freedom and danger. The catch? One wrong move could strip Arthur down to his boxers, and two hits meant instant death. To see the true ending, players had to finish the game twice, making it one of the most famously difficult titles on the SNES.

Despite the punishing challenge, the game was a hit with critics and players alike. Reviewers praised its gothic art direction, haunting soundtrack, and tight controls. By the end of the 1990s, it had sold over 1 million copies worldwide, cementing its place as a cult favorite among fans of tough-as-nails action games.

More than three decades later, Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts remains a Halloween staple for retro gamers; equal parts spooky, nostalgic, and maddeningly hard. If you think you have what it takes, grab your controller, don your armor, and prepare to face the undead. Just don’t blink… or you might end up back at the graveyard.
